Literally it means: Go with GOOD BIRDS. Hence the image! The Romans were especially interested in divination through bird signs. Our English word "auspicious" actually has bird-watching in it:
auspex = avis (bird) + spex (watching)
So the auspex was literally a "bird-seer" (in the prophetic sense of seer), and something auspicious was full of good omens, i.e. good birds.
Ito bonis avibus.
Go with good omens.
Go with good omens.
